Homemade French Onion Dip

French Onion Dip is a classic, savory snack that’s perfect for any occasion, from casual get-togethers to game day parties. This homemade version takes the beloved dip to the next level with rich, caramelized onions, fresh herbs, and just the right amount of seasoning. Whether you’re serving it with chips, veggies, or using it as a spread, this dip is sure to be a hit with everyone.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 3 medium yellow or white onions, peeled and diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups light sour cream (or plain Greek yogurt)
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh chives
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly-cracked black pepper

Directions:

1. Caramelize the Onions
Start by melting the butter (or heating the olive oil) in a large, heavy-bottomed stockpot or sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the diced onions to the pan and sauté them, stirring every 2-3 minutes. This process will take about 30 minutes, during which the onions will gradually caramelize, turning a deep golden brown color. If the bottom of the pan starts to burn, simply add a tablespoon of water at a time to prevent sticking while allowing the onions to continue caramelizing.

2. Add the Garlic
Once the onions are beautifully caramelized, add the minced garlic to the pan. Sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes, until the garlic is fragrant. Remove the mixture from the heat and transfer the caramelized onions and garlic to a medium mixing bowl. Place the bowl in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes to allow the onions to cool to room temperature.

3. Mix the Dip
After the onions have cooled, set aside a few tablespoons of the onion mixture to use later as a topping. To the bowl, add the light sour cream (or Greek yogurt), chopped fresh chives, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper. Stir everything together until the dip is evenly combined.

4. Season to Taste
Give the dip a taste, and adjust the seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or Worcestershire sauce if needed. The balance of flavors should be rich and savory, with a hint of sweetness from the caramelized onions.

5. Serve and Enjoy
Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and top with the reserved caramelized onions and extra chives, if desired. Serve immediately with your favorite chips, crackers, or fresh veggies. Alternatively, you can cover and refrigerate the dip for up to 3 days, allowing the flavors to meld together even more.

This French Onion Dip takes a classic recipe to the next level with deeply caramelized onions that bring out a rich, sweet-savory flavor. The combination of creamy sour cream or Greek yogurt with the robust taste of onions, garlic, and fresh herbs makes this dip an irresistible treat for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
3 medium yellow or white onions, peeled and diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups light sour cream (or plain Greek yogurt)
2 teaspoons chopped fresh chives
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce, to taste
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme)
1 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly-cracked black pepper

Instructions

1. In a large heavy-bottomed stockpot or sauté pan, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the onions and sauté, stirring every 2-3 minutes for about 30 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized to a deep golden brown color. (If the bottom of the pan starts to burn, just add in a tablespoon or so of water at a time.)
2. Add garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes, until fragrant. Remove from heat and transfer the onion mixture to a medium mixing bowl. Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes or until the onions reach room temperature.
3. Set aside a few tablespoons of the onion mixture, which we will use later as a topping. Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl of caramelized onions, and stir until evenly combined.
4. Taste and season with additional salt and pepper and extra Worcestershire, if need be.
5. Serve immediately, topped with the reserved caramelized onions and extra chives, if desired. Or cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
