Beijinho

Beijinho: A Classic Brazilian Sweet Treat

Beijinhos, which means “little kisses” in Portuguese, are a staple at Brazilian celebrations. These coconut truffle-like confections are simple yet utterly delicious. Today, I’m excited to share a recipe for making these beloved treats, perfect for any occasion where you want to add a touch of sweetness.

Ingredients

  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: 1 can (14 oz/396 g)
  • Unsweetened Grated Coconut: 1 ⅓ cups (100g)
  • Unsalted Butter: 1 tablespoon (plus more for greasing)
  • Grated Coconut: Additional, for rolling
  • Whole Cloves: For decorating

Instructions

  1. Cook the Mixture: In a medium-sized saucepan or small Dutch oven, combine the sweetened condensed milk, grated coconut, and butter. Cook this mixture over medium-low heat for 10-20 minutes. Stir continuously until it thickens—check readiness by running a rubber spatula through the mixture. If it leaves a trail that slowly closes up, it’s done. Optionally, use a thermometer to ensure the mixture reaches 190º-200ºF (88º-95ºC).
  2. Cooling the Mixture: Transfer the thickened mixture onto a plate generously greased with butter. Spread it into a single layer and cover with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming. Allow it to cool completely at room temperature.
  3. Forming the Beijinhos: Once cool, grease your hands with butter and scoop about 1 tablespoon of the mixture to form small balls, roughly the size of a cherry. This batch should make about 20-25 beijinhos.
  4. Coating: Roll each ball in grated coconut until fully covered, then press a whole clove into the center of each ball for a traditional look.
  5. Serving: Place the beijinhos in small paper cups for a festive presentation. Remember to remind your guests to remove the cloves before eating.

Ingredients

Scale

1 can (14oz/396g) sweetened condensed milk
1 ⅓ cups (100g) unsweetened grated coconut
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, plus more for greasing plate and hands
Grated coconut for rolling
Whole cloves for decorating

Instructions

In a medium-sized saucepan or small Dutch oven, combine the sweetened condensed milk, grated coconut, and butter. Cook over medium-low heat for 10-20 minutes or until the mixture thickens. You will know it’s ready when you can run a rubber spatula through the middle of the mixture and it leaves a trail that takes a while to come back together. Optionally, use a thermometer to check; the beijinho is ready at around 190º-200ºF (88º-95ºC).
Transfer the mixture to a plate that has been generously greased with butter, spreading it into a single layer. Cover with plastic wrap and let it cool completely.
Once the mixture has cooled, grease your hands with butter and form smooth balls with about 1 tablespoon of the mixture, about the size of a cherry. This recipe will yield about 20 to 25 beijinhos.
Roll the balls in grated coconut, then insert a clove in the middle.
Serve as-is or in small paper cups. Remind guests to remove the cloves before eating.
