Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb box mostaccioli pasta
  • 1 lb ground Italian sausage
  • 1 (24-28 oz) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking once the dish assembly is complete.
  2. Cook the Sausage In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground Italian sausage until fully cooked. Set aside once done.
  3. Boil the Pasta Simultaneously, bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the mostaccioli pasta according to the package instructions, usually about 10 minutes. Drain well.
  4. Prepare the Sauce Mix the cooked sausage with the marinara sauce in the skillet, and maintain at a low heat to keep warm while preparing other components.
  5. Mix the Cheese Filling In a separate bowl, combine the cottage cheese, eggs, 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese, 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well until smooth and even.
  6. Assemble the Dish In a 9×13-inch baking dish sprayed with non-stick cooking spray, layer the sauce, pasta, and cheese mixture. Begin with half the sauce, add half the pasta, spread the cheese mixture, then another layer of pasta, and finally the remaining sauce. Top with the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake the Dish Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 10 minutes to allow the cheese to become bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Ready to Serve Let the baked mostaccioli sit for a few minutes post-baking before serving to allow it to set slightly for easier serving.
