Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 heaping Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup hot water (from the tap)
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp milk (or buttermilk / whipping cream)
  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preparing the Cake Batter: In a small mixing bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. In a separate small saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa powder, and hot water. Heat until the butter melts and the mixture starts to boil, then pour it over the dry ingredients and stir.
  2. Mixing the Wet Ingredients: Add the egg yolk, buttermilk, baking soda, and vanilla to the bowl. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  3. Baking the Cake: Pour the batter into a greased 9 x 7 inch baking pan and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Making the Frosting: Right after the cake comes out of the oven, prepare the frosting. In a small saucepan, combine the butter, milk, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar. Heat and stir until the butter melts and the ingredients combine into a smooth mixture. Be careful to avoid boiling. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
  5. Finishing the Cake: Pour the hot frosting over the warm cake, spreading it evenly with a spatula to cover the entire surface.
