Ingredients
Scale
- 6–8 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup water
- 3/4 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apple Filling: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch or 8×8-inch baking dish. Peel, core, and slice the apples. In a large bowl, toss the apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Add water and stir to combine. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Make the Crisp Topping: In a medium bowl, mix the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Incorporate the cold, cubed butter, using either a pastry cutter or your fingers, until the mix appears as coarse crumbs. If desired, add the chopped nuts.
- Assemble the Crisp: Evenly distribute the crisp topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
- Bake the Crisp: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly and tender. If the topping browns too quickly, cover with aluminum foil and continue to bake.
