Whether you’re hosting a gathering, rounding out a family dinner, or simply craving a delicious snack, these onion rings are sure to impress with their golden exterior and tender bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onion Rings: Separate the onion slices into individual rings. Place them in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over the rings to soak for at least 30 minutes, which softens the onions and infuses them with flavor.
  2. Prepare the Breading Station: In one bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. In a separate bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Heat the Oil: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Coat the Onion Rings: Take an onion ring from the buttermilk, let the excess drip off, then dredge in the flour mixture for a light coat. Dip again in buttermilk, followed by a coating in the panko breadcrumbs. Repeat with all onion rings.
  5. Fry the Onion Rings: Fry a few onion rings at a time in the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding, for about 2-3 minutes per side or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove them using a slotted spoon and let drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve: Serve the onion rings warm with your choice of dipping sauces, such as ranch, ketchup, or spicy aioli.
