Description
There’s something truly comforting about digging into a bowl of hearty beef and mashed potatoes, especially when it’s smothered in a rich, savory gravy. This rustic dish combines tender, flavorful ground beef with creamy, buttery mashed potatoes, topped with a thick gravy that’s seasoned perfectly with a hint of Worcestershire and optional thyme.
Ingredients
For the Ground Beef Gravy:
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon thyme (optional)
1 cup frozen peas and carrots (optional)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
2 pounds potatoes, peeled and quartered
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare Mashed Potatoes: In a large pot, cover the potatoes with water and bring to a boil. Cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and return the potatoes to the pot. Add milk and butter, mashing until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and keep warm.
Cook Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat. Add onion and garlic, cooking until soft and translucent.
Make Gravy: Sprinkle flour over beef and onions, stirring to combine. Cook for 2 minutes. Gradually stir in beef broth, avoiding lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Add peas and carrots if using, cook until heated.
Serve: Spoon mashed potatoes onto plates. Top with beef gravy. Serve hot.
