Homemade Bread Bowls

There’s something incredibly comforting about curling up with a warm bowl of soup, especially when it’s served in a homemade bread bowl. These bread bowls not only amplify the cozy factor but also make for a delicious and edible dish! Here’s a straightforward recipe to help you create your own bread bowls at home. Whether it’s for a special family dinner or just to warm up a chilly evening, these bread bowls are sure to impress.

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups of warm water
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • ¾ tablespoon of rapid-rise yeast
  • 4 cups of bread flour (plus more as needed)

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Dough: Start by combining the warm water, oil, sugar, salt, and yeast in a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Add 2 cups of flour and mix well. Gradually incorporate the remaining flour, half a cup at a time, until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. The dough should be smooth yet slightly tacky to touch.
  2. Knead and First Rise: Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. This can be done either by hand on a floured surface or with the dough hook of your stand mixer. Once kneaded, place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot until it has doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  3. Shape the Dough: After the first rise, punch down the dough gently and divide it into six equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, cut an X on the top of each dough ball. Cover them with a kitchen towel and allow to rise again until they’ve doubled, which should take about 30-45 minutes.
  4. Baking: During the last 15 minutes of the second rise, preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C). Once preheated, bake the bread bowls for about 15 minutes or until they turn golden brown and are cooked through.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the bread bowls from the oven and let them cool on a rack. Once cooled, cut a circle out of the top of each bowl and scoop out the inside to create a cavity. Fill with your favorite soup and serve immediately.

2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
¾ tablespoon rapid rise yeast
4 cups bread flour (plus more as needed)

Instructions

In a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, mix warm water, oil, sugar, salt, yeast, and 2 cups of flour.
Gradually add remaining flour ½ cup at a time until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and is smooth, yet slightly tacky.
Knead the dough until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Gently punch down the dough and divide into six equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
With a sharp knife, cut an x in the top of each dough ball. Cover lightly with a kitchen towel and let rise until doubled in size, 30–45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 400°F during the last 15 minutes of rise time.
Bake for 15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove to a cooling rack to cool completely.
To serve, cut a circle out of the top of each bread bowl, then scoop out the inside to make a bowl. Ladle hot soup into the bowl and serve immediately.
