Homemade Pretzel Twists: A Perfect Snack for Any Occasion

There’s something incredibly satisfying about making your own pretzels at home. Whether you’re hosting a gathering, looking for a fun family activity, or simply craving a warm, salty snack, these homemade pretzel twists are sure to hit the spot. With a golden-brown crust and a soft, chewy center, they’re perfect for dipping into your favorite sauces or enjoying on their own.

Ingredients:

  • 1 packet (¼ ounce) active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons table salt
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • 12 cups water
  • ¾ cup baking soda
  • 2 large eggs, whisked
  • Coarse salt, for topping

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Baking Sheet:
Before you begin, preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Prepare a baking sheet by either spraying it with non-stick cooking spray or lining it with parchment paper. Set it aside for later.

2. Mix the Dough:
In a large bowl, or in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a hook attachment, combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Mix for about 3 minutes until everything is well combined.

3. Add the Dry Ingredients:
Gradually add the flour to the mixture, one cup at a time, followed by the table salt and melted butter. Continue mixing until the dough forms a smooth, elastic ball.

4. Knead the Dough:
Once the dough has formed, knead it 6-8 times until it’s smooth and pliable.

5. Let the Dough Rise:
Lightly spray a large mixing bowl with non-stick cooking spray. Place the dough ball into the bowl, cover it with a light kitchen towel, and allow it to rise until it has doubled in size. This should take about 60 minutes.

6. Shape the Pretzels:
After the dough has risen, remove the towel, punch the dough down, and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Cut the dough in half, then divide each half into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 14-inch long strip. Fold each strip of dough in half, twist it over itself, and pinch the ends to seal, forming a twist.

7. Prepare the Baking Soda Bath:
In a large pot, bring 12 cups of water to a boil over medium-high heat. Slowly add the baking soda.

8. Boil the Pretzel Twists:
Carefully place one or two pretzel twists into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then flip them over and boil for an additional 20 seconds. Remove the twists with a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough.

9. Add the Finishing Touches:
Brush each pretzel twist with the whisked eggs and sprinkle with coarse salt.

10. Bake:
Place the pretzel twists into the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes or until they are golden brown.

Enjoy!
