The “Sour Cream and Onion Chicken Thighs with Orzo Delight” is a sumptuous meal combining the tender juiciness of chicken thighs with the creamy, soothing texture of orzo pasta. Laden with a rich blend of sour cream and onion flavors, this dish is quintessential comfort food, perfect for a hearty dinner on chilly evenings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Chicken thighs (skin-on, bone-in)
  • ½ cup Sour Cream
  • 1 cup Orzo pasta or another small pasta shape
  • 2 cups Chicken broth
  • 1 large Green onion (sliced thinly, separate white parts from dark green parts)
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Butter
  • Sour Cream & Onion Spice Blend
  • ½ tablespoon Onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon Ranch powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Kosher salt (plus more for other steps)

Instructions

  1. Preparing the Chicken About 1-2 hours before cooking, remove the chicken from the refrigerator, drain it, and pat it dry. Generously season with kosher salt on all sides and allow it to come to room temperature to ensure crispy skin when cooked.
  2. Prepare the Spice Blend In a shallow bowl, combine onion powder, ranch powder, garlic powder, and kosher salt to make the sour cream and onion spice blend. Set aside for later use.
  3. Season and Cook the Chicken Dry the chicken again with paper towels if necessary. Season each side with a pinch of salt and black pepper. Apply the spice blend liberally to the skin side, reserving about ½ teaspoon for the orzo. Heat olive oil in a pot over medium-high heat and sear the chicken, skin-side down, until crispy, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sauté and Prepare Orzo Melt butter in the same pot used for chicken, and sauté the white parts of the green onion until softened. Add orzo and toast lightly before pouring in the chicken broth. Bring to a boil, then simmer until orzo is cooked through.
  5. Combine and Finish Cooking Stir in the remaining spice blend and sour cream to the orzo, adjusting the seasoning as necessary. Return the chicken to the pot, skin side up, and cook until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 160-165°F and the orzo has absorbed the broth. Garnish with green onions or chives before serving.
