Ingredients
For the biscuits
3 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup butter, cold (1 stick)
1 cup buttermilk (or whole milk)
1 large egg
2 cups packed sharp cheddar cheese (8 ounces)
For the garlic butter topping
1/4 cup butter, melted (half stick)
1 clove garlic, smashed and minced
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Grate cheese to yield 2 cups packed, chill in fridge.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and salt.
Cut in cold butter until pea-sized pieces form.
Whisk buttermilk and egg, add to dry ingredients. Stir to combine.
Mix in chilled cheese.
For drop biscuits, proceed to step 9. To roll out, dust work surface and dough with flour.
Roll into a 12×16 inch rectangle, fold like a letter, roll out to 1 inch thick. Cut with a 2.5 inch biscuit cutter.
Place biscuits touching in a pan. Brush with buttermilk.
Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden. Brush with garlic butter topping.
